The 23-year-old, from Mount Evelyn, became stranded in steep bush land near Briens Gorge Falls, outside of Wangaratta, about 11pm Monday. Police, SES and CFA attended the incident after they were contacted by the woman's friend.
Victoria Police said in a statement the woman had threatened self-harm to her friend in a phone conversation. Wangaratta CFA senior station officer Ian Lilley said members used a thermal imaging camera to help locate the woman. Ropes were used to lower rescuers from above, before the woman was helped down the slope.
“Where she had gotten herself was a very steep difficult area,” Mr Lilley said.
The woman was conveyed to hospital for assessment.
