The issue recently arose in Albury Local Court when North Albury man Joshua Claude Phillips, 21, was caught with a laser pointer.
He was on parole when stopped by police at Albury train station on May 5, before giving a false name.
His wallet was located and he admitted who he was.
“I am on parole and I don’t want to go back to jail,” he pleaded.
“I don’t have any drugs.”
The laser pointer was located during a search and he admitted to buying it from eBay about a year earlier.
Magistrate Tony Murray said many young people were ignorant about the sheer number weapons declared as banned items.
Phillips was put on a bond and fined and the laser pointer will be destroyed.
