The rocks, weighing 20-25 kilograms each, were placed in a circle to create a garden around the “historic Beechworth” sign.
Sometime between 10.30pm Tuesday and 7am Wednesday, they were stolen.
Leading Senior Constable Andrew Deegan, of Beechworth police, said the rough-cut, light-coloured granite stones were about 30cm x 20cm in size and cost about $10,000.
They had been on show on the side of Beechworth-Wodonga Road, between Balaclava and Cemetery roads, since February.
The theft was discovered by an Indigo Council landscaper on Thursday morning.
“Someone’s pulled over with a trailer and loaded up these stones,” Leading Senior Constable Deegan said.
“If anyone saw a car pulled over on the side of the road, they should call us.”
