Eight days after sitting out the second half of the Pigeons’ heavy loss to Lavington with what appeared a significant calf injury, McMillan played an important role as Yarrawonga earned a rematch against the Panthers with a five-point win over Wodonga Raiders.
The only problem with his performance was that he kicked 0.5 and not 5.0, according to Pigeons co-coach Chris Kennedy.
“He was in no doubt when he injured himself that he would play,” he said.
“He did everything he could to get up and it was a real late call that we made him play.
“All along he said he would be right and that’s enough for me with ‘Motor’.
“He’s been a great player for our club for a long time and he deserved the right to make the call.”
Raiders coach Daryn Cresswell said the Pigeons’ experienced campaigners, including McMillan, were the key reason they got over the line.
“They’re an experienced football side that have played a lot of finals and that’s we need to do, take the experience onboard and understand what it takes to succeed at this level,” he said.
“Xavier Leslie, Tyler Bonat and Matt Gorman, they’ve played a lot of senior footy and the guys on the ball for us, they haven’t really, Tyler Cornish is 21, Brad St John is 19, Matt Neagle is 18, Will Donaghey is 17.
“They haven’t tasted a lot of senior Ovens and Murray finals, they’ll be better for that experience.”
