Victoria Police said the five-year-old fell on stairs at Wodonga South Primary, part of Southern Rise Education Centre, about 4.30pm Tuesday.
Paramedics treated the boy, before taking him to Albury Hospital - where he died soon after.
Principal Clint Eckhardt released a statement to the media on Wednesday morning saying his thoughts were with all affected.
“I’m deeply saddened to confirm that we lost one of our youngest students yesterday in a tragic accident,” he said.
“This news has had a profound impact … and I know that our community will band together and support each other throughout this time.
“We have support available for anyone who needs it at school today and over the coming days.” The death was not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
