Benalla has been identified as one of Victoria’s highest risk areas during Operation Scoreboard so extra resources from the State Highway Patrol have been allocated throughout the operation.

Leading Senior Constable Marc Newton, of Benalla Highway Patrol, said the extra officers were already in the city on Friday with automatic number plate recognition technology.

The cameras allowed police to see if the registered driver of the car had any disqualifications or fines owing.

“They’ve been doing great business in the main street of Benalla,” Leading Senior Constable Newton said.

He said motorists should not expect any leniency or warnings if they were caught over the weekend.

“We will be absolutely in force, you will see us everywhere,” he said.

“If you want to test the odds and think you can escape a booze bus or every car, which can also test for drugs, you’re crazy.”

Leading Senior Constable Newton said the Hume Freeway was already a “madhouse” on Thursday evening with traffic coming up for the long weekend.

Police issued fines for speeding, but no drink or drug driving offences.

The heavy rain and flooded roads increased the chances of a crash or injuries if motorists tried to take any risks.

“Police absolutely implore motorists to drive and ride to the conditions,” Leading Senior Constable Newton said. “Don’t challenge roads that are inundated with water.”

As Victorians head back to work on Monday, NSW residents will enjoy the last day of their long weekend.

Albury Local Area command said their officers want everyone to have a safe and happy school holidays, Labour Day weekend and to enjoy the footy grand finals.

They will also be out in force for Operation Slow Down.

The message to drivers is to ensure they wear seatbelts, don’t text and drive, take plenty of breaks, stick to the speed limit and never drink alcohol or take illicit drugs then drive.
