Renewed flooding could develop from Monday as falls of up to 25mm are forecast for North East catchments from Sunday night until Tuesday.

But Benalla-based SES spokeswoman Gabrielle Grant said the chance of worsening floodwaters from the rain was minor.

“If that’s just steady rain over the two days, there will be a negligible impact on current flood levels,” she said.

“If it happened in one hour, obviously there’d be flooding implications, but (the Bureau of Meteorology) is predicting it to be over the two days.”

After a tense night of uncertainty Parfitt Road residents in Wangaratta were told they could return to their homes Saturday morning after the SES ordered an evacuation via text message about 6pm Friday.

Up to 150 residents chose to stay the night with family and friends but 70 people decided to remain in their dwellings.

A levee bank on the Ovens River had sprung a leak, which raised concerns it could burst and inundate nearby houses.

The SES door-knocked homes on Sunday to inform residents the levee had cracks emerge on Friday into Saturday.

But Ms Grant said the cracks had not widened and were being inspected by the SES every hour.

Work was under way to hold the levee steady until floodwaters retreated.

The SES may need to reinstate the evacuation notification should the levee be further compromised.

Ms Grant attributed the breach to the levee’s age. 

“It’s 40 years old, and it’s just been hammered over the last period of time” she said.

“It’s just nature, there’s not any specific reason.”

Flooding at a West Wodonga sand quarry remained steady over the weekend and the SES was monitoring the situation.

The Ovens at Wangaratta was expected to remain around the moderate flood level of 12.40 metres by Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, soaked soil from rain has caused ground softening and many trees have toppled.

The SES advised to stay away from trees, particularly along rail trials, walking and bike paths.
