The seven-year-old notified her mother of a blaze in her bedroom on London Road, Wodonga, about 6.30am on Sunday.
Detective Senior Constable Tristan Purss said the woman had tried to extinguish the fire, which caused it to spread, and the mum and five children fled.
“The front bedroom was extensively damaged, including the bed and furniture, and there was smoke and radiant heat damage to adjacent rooms,” he said.
“There were no injuries to anyone.
“There are no suspicious circumstances as far as criminality is concerned.
“The most likely cause is potential misadventure by the child in the bedroom.
“All other possible contributing causes have been ruled out at this time.”
The family, which includes children aged between about four and 14, are being supported by the Red Cross with food and accommodation.
