Brett Eddy, 33, lives in Tallangatta with his father and has struggled with drug and alcohol problems.
Magistrate John O’Callaghan has warned Eddy – who has a son he rarely sees – to decide how he wants to spend the rest of his life.
Eddy's offending took place at bottle shops and other stores in Echuca, Nathalia and Kyabram in March, June, and July.
He pinched bottles and cans of whiskey and bourbon and items of clothing.
Eddy was also caught driving without a licence in the main street of Rutherglen on April 8.
Mr O’Callaghan noted Eddy had a lengthy history of offending that warranted a jail term.
He told the 33-year-old he was at a critical age and that his son needed a father, not someone in jail.
Eddy must pay compensation for the stolen items and complete a two-year community corrections order after being released.
