Mum is from Berrigan originally and I have had seven uncles who have been out there
- Lee Schmidt
Schmidt, 29, said he was excited to be entering coaching ranks after 110 matches for Corowa-Rutherglen.
“Mum is from Berrigan originally and I have had seven uncles who have been out there,” Schmidt said.
“They have been at me for a while and I guess I have always been keen to coach at some stage.
“I’m 30 this year and I thought I would do it while I can because I don’t see myself having a kick when I’m 36 with my dodgy knees.
“I’m looking forward to it.”
Schmidt started his career at Hopefield-Buraja before making his senior debut at John Foord Oval as a 17-year-old.
He has also spent three seasons with South Adelaide and South Augusta.
“It was a hard decision to leave Corowa because there are a lot of good, young kids there,” he said.
“I have had some great times at the club.
“Terry (Burgess) has been really good to me through the process.
“Berrigan is a fresh start though.
“I spoke to a few other clubs but I wanted to try something fresh and get my own take on it.”
Schmidt kicked 23 goals in 18 matches this season.
Berrigan lost the Picola and District league north-west preliminary final by 10 points under coach Ty Russell this season.
