A document published on Park’s website detailed Wangaratta company Superior Joinery would single-glaze windows being restored.
To achieve BAL (bushfire attack level) ratings, Parks plans to install compliant fly screens providing protection from an ember attack.
Former member of the community action for the chalet group Sean Hallam said single-glazing windows would result in higher costs if the chalet was opened.
“The chalet was always expensive to heat and if the chalet was re-opened, double-glazing windows would save possibly $100,000 a year in energy costs,” he said.
“Talking about a whole-of-mountain approach may apply in the future but the chalet is in such a critical state it needs to be restored now.”
On restoring Australia’s largest timber building, the document reads; “To fully restore the 100‐year‐old chalet and re‐open it as a day visitor centre or contemporary accommodation would require a substantial multi‐million‐dollar investment.
A decision to allocate any further funding would mean that there would be less money for other priority projects across the state.

“The Victorian Government has already allocated millions of dollars towards maintaining the chalet and a decision to allocate any further funding would mean that there would be less money for other priority projects across the state.
“Originally intended to be built of granite, the timber chalet was designed as a temporary building and, over the years, various improvements and additions were made using timber as the main material.
“Unfortunately, there appeared to be a lack of foresight regarding the building’s longevity.”
The document also reveals a new CCTV system was recently installed at the chalet, monitored daily.
The MBDAG will present plans to the government in December.
