Police were called to the Sanger Street business about 6.20pm on Saturday.
The employee was standing at the counter and a man in his 50s walked behind him and threatened him with a knife.
He took cash and ran and was last seen heading south on Sanger Street.
The man had a singlet and black tracksuit pants and is about 185 centimetres tall with balding grey hair.
