A 43-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a fatal stabbing in Lavington on Sunday night.
Albury police Inspector David Cottee said the man was in custody, but the interview process had just begun and no charges had been laid as yet.
“We are appealing to people who may have witness or heard the events of that night,” he said.
“There were a number of attempts to revive that man in Webb Street, people attempted to resuscitate that man, but he unfortunately died in hospital.”
Police were still looking for the weapon.
The victim’s identity was yet to be released, but Inspector Cottee said he was a father and family man.
Homicide squad detectives and forensics officers have spent Monday morning examining the Webb Street home and surrounding streets for evidence in the fatal stabbing.
The street was blocked overnight and only reopened at 9am for traffic.
Police have been door-knocking at neighbouring homes to talk to residents.
Only a dog remained at the home, which had an unkempt lawn and overflowing rubbish bins, but no signs of the violence from the night before.
Neighbours said they heard yelling from the property about 8.20pm, but said it was not unusual for the occupants.
But this was different.
An upset man was seen out on the street calling an ambulance, telling them the victim had been stabbed.
The incident has left neighbours frightened in their own neighbourhood.
“I heard a ruckus, but sadly there’s always a ruckus – they always fight,” one man told The Border Mail.
”There hasn’t been trouble as such, until this … We were moving anyway because we don’t like it here.”
