Adam Jay Azzi, 43, appeared before Albury Local Court on Tuesday following the death of Lloyd Frederick Kennedy on Sunday night.
Mr Kennedy was pronounced dead in hospital following unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him outside a house in Webb Street.
Tributes have continued to flow for Mr Kennedy, with friends expressing shock at his death.
“You will be sadly missed,” one person wrote online.
“Our hearts go out to your family.
“Thinking of you all at this sad time.”
Another person questioned what was happening to the area and said their thoughts were with the Kennedy family.
Azzi has been charged with murder and the attempted murder of second man, possession of .86 grams of methamphetamine, knife possession and contravention of an order.
The 43-year-old appeared calm during a hearing before magistrate Michael Crompton.
He was dressed in a prison-issued green jumper and shorts, sporting a long curly mullet and short hair.
He did not speak in court and did not make an application for bail.
The murder and attempted murder are alleged to have occurred between 8.27pm and 8.30pm at Lavington on Sunday.
Police allege Azzi was in possession of the ice at 10.45am the following day, which is when he was arrested.
The former champion Wodonga and Tallangatta league footballer is listed in court documents as living on Gundowring Road at Gundowring.
He looked around the courtroom on Tuesday and appeared relaxed during the proceedings.
Azzi was formally refused bail by the magistrate.
Brief service orders must be made by December 6, followed by a reply two weeks later.
Police continue to investigate the incident outside the home, which was quiet on Tuesday following Sunday's death.
Detective Chief Inspector David Cottee had earlier described the scene at the property as “mayhem”.
“There were a couple of attempts to revive that man on Webb Street, I applaud the people who attempted to resuscitate that man, unfortunately he died in hospital,” he said on Monday.
“It’s a very complex investigation in terms of crime scene examination.”
The homicide squad is involved in the investigation with local police.
Inspector Cottee had said Azzi was arrested without incident.
While he has been charged with attempted murder relating to a second man with Mr Kennedy before his death, the man was not injured.
Police won’t disclose whether the weapon has been recovered as the investigation is ongoing.
Azzi will return to the Albury Local Court on December 20.
