But knowing that fires can be unpredictable to say the least, Forest Fire Management Victoria decided it would be best to cover all bases.
Twenty-two new firefighters are undertaking a training course in Beechworth this week, covering a range of topics including fire behaviour, fire suppression, planned burning, safety and survival techniques.
Jarrod Hayse, from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning said training was all about making sure they were prepared for what might lie ahead this summer.
“Our focus in the spring and leading into summer is all about preparedness,” he said.
“This is the second course we've run in the Hume.”
