The violent man will spend six months in jail for a series of assaults on strangers and his former partner.
Lam was in a jealous rage at a gathering on August 29 when he held a 20-centimetre knife to the back of a man’s head, walked him to the front door, then smashed his head through a glass panel.
The victim needed 30 stitches in his head.
Lam also pleaded guilty in Wodonga Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to a series of family violence offences.
The day before the party, he punched his partner in the side of the head while driving her and their children on the Hume Freeway because she tried to stop him looking through her phone.
The abuse continued that night when he struck her multiple times to knock her unconscious and fracture her cheekbone.
Lam’s violence also developed into road rage after a 61-year-old driver beeped at him for overtaking across double white lines on Bonegilla Drive.
He pulled in front of the car and braked suddenly.
When both cars pulled over and the other man approached, Lam threatened him by pulling out the knife.
Magistrate Annabel Hawkins said a psychological report found Lam did not suffer from mental illness, but had an “odd personality style” which made him prone to jealousy.
“This is serious offending, very serious offending,” she said. “He was using the vehicle as a weapon – his behaviour was extraordinary and very, very dangerous.”
The magistrate said the abuse was “inexplicable” during a time when family violence was rampant.
“You placed your partner and your children in grave danger,” Ms Hawkins said.
Solicitor Mario Vaccaro said Lam was treated for depression and anxiety in custody.
“Things were unstable in the household with him and his partner and he had resorted to using amphetamines (speed),” he said.
