After posting 210 on the opening day of the clash, the Wanderers rolled their opponents for just 115, largely thanks to Mark Butters’ efforts of 4-19.
Beechworth captain Brenton Surrey was happy with the final result, but said the side lacked enthusiasm in the field at times throughout the afternoon.
“It’s always good to keep winning, but I don’t think it was our best performance,” Surrey said.
“Round one should be your worst performance of the year and you want to be playing your best cricket in the last three or four weeks of the season.”
Surrey said Butters had three or four spells throughout the day and could have had five or six wickets if a few more things went his way.
“We hung in there, but we would have liked to have got them a bit cheaper,” Surrey said.
Beechworth was able to add a further 90 runs to its score in its second innings, which could prove very handy by season’s end.
“Essentially 100 runs is an extra point, so it’s always nice to bank extra points when you can,” Surrey said.
Riley Petts top scored in the second stanza with 39, while Surrey added a quickfire 32.
In other WDCA results, City Colts held off rivals Rovers United-Bruck by bowling them out for 172, successfully defending 6-218 to take outright top spot.
Jacob Schonafinger tried desperately to guide the Hawks to victory with an inspired knock of 70, but didn’t have a lot of support from the rest of the batting order besides 28 from Luke Whitten and 30 from Hamish Busk.
Corey Van Aken was the chief destroyer for City Colts, finishing with impressive figures of 4-33 from 11.2 overs, while Dylan Adams claimed the vital scalps of Jordan Blades and Jon Hyde in his return of 3-36.
Yarrawonga-Mulwala ripped through Delatite, who were all out for 77 in reply to the Lakers’ 153 from the previous week.
James Irvine’s 4-22 were the best figures of the match.
Teenage sensation James Jordon capped off an outstanding game by posting his second half-century of the match for Yarrawonga-Mulwala in its second innings total of 3-85.
A century from Greta’s Matthew Gathercole guided it to victory against Benalla Bushrangers.
Chasing 212, Greta were 9-184 until Gathercole combined with tailender Mitchell Wheelens for a 60-run last-wicket stand, which got them to a total of 244.
Lastly, Ovens Valley united were far too strong for Benalla-Violet Town United, comfortably defending 156 by routing their opponents for 73, before batting again to make a further 157 runs.
