A dominant display from Stephen Broad’s side, which produced a 34-10 victory against Ian Doolan’s team, was the determining factor in the 73-53 result.
Norm Honey’s side fell just short to John Dawson, 17-19, while Allen Ross’ combination also went down by the same margin, 22-24.
However, the Hopper’s aggregate advantage handed it seven points for the win and one point for its rink, while Howlong came away with the remaining two points for its pair of rinks won.
“The greens were good and it was typical windy conditions,” Honey said.
Culcairn were too strong for the Commercial Club, 69-50, while Lavington won a thriller against Henty, 52-51.
Henty’s Peter Forck defeated Les Waldron, 23-20 and Kim Maher won over Ken Allen, 16-10, however, Lavington’s sole rink win was a 22-12 result, skipped by Brian Linehan against Glen Harrison, which delivered it the victory.
A busy schedule of bowls lies ahead next weekend with round two of the pennant season on Saturday, before the semi-finals and final of the district fours are staged at Henty on Sunday.
Howlong’s Wally Bourne will face Honey and his North Albury side in the first semi-final, while another North Albury side, skipped by Max Duncan, meets Lavington’s Les Waldron in the other clash.
The final will be played later that afternoon.
