Mother of two, Melissa Montoneri, says the talk about ‘big-school’ has been non-stop, as eldest son Ethan, 5, prepares to start at Wodonga Primary School.
“We had an orientation day back in November and he’s been counting down the days since then,” Mrs Montoneri said.
Ethan will be one of hundreds of children heading into primary school in the region, and like most, can’t wait to enjoy the perks of ‘big kids’ school.
“I’m going to play on the monkey bars and the swings and also the flying fox,” Ethan said.
Keen to get into routine, he has already had three practice runs in his brand new school uniform.
“He has been asking every other day if he can wear his uniform and when he can go to his big school,” Mrs Montoneri said.
Elizabeth O’Connell, 4, shares in the excitement, despite being one of the youngest entering into her class at St Anne’s Primary School in North Albury.
“When I go to school I can play with some of my friends and play on the playground,” Elizabeth said.
While some school starters may be dealing with the expected nerves, St Francis Primary’s newest student, five year old Archer Irwin, is well prepared.
“I know what time to wake up… because I just know everything,” Archer said.
Although he conceded that he still needs to go to school, as he may not know as much as he leads on.
“I still need to go to school, I just know some stuff,” he said.
While starting school may seem daunting, the kids found comfort by the idea of having a ‘buddy’ when they get to school.
Molly Habermann, 5, is particularly excited by this, having already met her buddy Indiana.
“I get to play on the playground and have lunch with her,” she said.
It may be a big step for new students, but it’s also a huge moment for parents too.
“Before I had kids I used to wonder why parents cry on their first day of school,” Mrs Montoneri said.
“But now I totally get it - it’s a big milestone that comes with a lot of emotions.”
