Australian Deaf Games organising committee chairman Alex Jones encouraged the children at Friday’s one year to go event to stay proud.
“You guys should feel good about yourselves and you guys should feel good about who you are,” he said.
About a dozen deaf and hearing impaired Border youngsters aged from six to 19 years took part in touch football and basketball clinics at Lauren Jackson Sports Centre as part of the launch.
Deaf Sports Australia’s Irena Farinacci said many of the children had not met each other before.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for them to actually learn that they’re not alone in being deaf or hard of hearing and that there are opportunities for them to participate in sports,” she said.
