Whiteley spent his formative years in Sydney but would escape to the central west of NSW whenever he could, spending his weekends drawing in the countryside.
He frequently travelled to Marulan, Lucknow, Oberon, Carcoar and Bathurst to sketch and paint intimate landscapes.
Benalla Art Gallery’s director Bryony Nainby said Whiteley found peace when visiting the bush.
"His works often include birds, eggs, nests, trees, rocks and rivers, and combine elements of abstraction and realism in a lyrical and expressive manner," she said.
The show has drawings, paintings and sculptures from Sydney’s Brett Whiteley Studio and the Art Gallery of New South Wales collections.
It will be open to the public until April 23.
