Robert Jordan fought in Afghanistan, East Timor and the South Pacific, and his great-grandfather and grandfather served in World War I and II.
Mr Jordan, who suffers from PTSD, heard a car horn outside his home on Bryants Gap Road about midday on Friday.
When he walked outside, the car had sped off, but all the stolen war medals were stuffed into his letterbox in a green bag.
The rest of the stolen items, including a $17,500 engagement ring and collectable knives, are still missing.
Mr Jordan told police he was extremely grateful the medals were returned.
The theft appeared to have been targeted.
Detective Acting Sergeant Justin Foots said police were still investigating the incident.
“Wodonga detectives are still appealing for information from the public in wanting to bring the offenders to justice,” he said.
