Murray Conservatorium chief executive Stephen O’Connell OAM composed the work which will be performed by Sichuan University Symphony Orchestra in Chengdu on April 14.
O’Connell and lyrics writer Dr Graham Sattler will perform solos in soprano saxophone and baritone, respectively, to a sold-out audience of 1000.
“We’re playing at the biggest music school in the world with a full orchestral program,” O’Connell said.
“We hope it’s the start of more cultural exchanges with China.”
O’Connell’s work will be performed in a jazz concert with art projections from Murray Conservatorium’s Jenny O’Hara.
O’Connell (saxophone) and O’Hara (flute) will give masterclasses at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music.
In a broader project O’Connell, Dr Sattler, Kevin Barker (string quartet/orchestra arrangements), Tim Podesta (dance/choreography) and Peter Adams (producer/narrative) will tour the show in August. SOQ Collective will play at The Cube Wodonga on October 28.
