Long-time water polo identity Wayne Gould plans to create the Gould Swim Academy in a leased building in Boronia Street.
He said last night it would involve himself and his wife, Janine, daughter Kristy Hogan and her husband, Tom, and other family members.
Mrs Hogan is a swimming coach and former Australian country water polo team member.
“We’ve all been involved with water polo and swimming,’’ Mr Gould said.
Albury Council has received a plan to build a 25m above-ground pool in the warehouse section of the building, leaving the front section available for change rooms and offices.
The pool would be 6m wide, sufficient for four or five lanes.
It will be the second private indoor heated swimming pool with the other, GT Aquatics in Lavington, operated by Tap-Ky Duong.
His planning consultant James Laycock said yesterday it was proposed to heat the pool by solar heating in summer and by natural gas in winter.
The academy would be used by training squads and for learn-to-swim programs.
Plans by Albury and Wodonga councils to build indoor swim centres are on hold.
Albury hasn’t yet chosen a site to be developed as a major aquatics centre.
The options are the Albury Swim Centre near the river, Alexandra Park and Jelbart Park.
Wodonga has deferred its proposed centre at White Box Rise because of its financial situation but continues to operate the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre which as a 25m heated indoor pool.
Mr Gould said there was a demand for an additional indoor facility and he hoped the family would be able to operate this summer.
Mr Gould was a founder of the SS&A Sharks water polo club.
