An 18-month-old male kelpie, Woody, was the name on the buyers’ lips as he went under the hammer, fetching the whopping figure at the Wagga Yard Dog Club working dog auction.
Taralga owner Mat Corby said he was pleased with the sale, after specifying a $4000 reserve for the moderately trained dog.
“The sale obviously well exceeded my expectations,” Mr Corby said.
“There were a lot of people around and luckily for me two people really wanted him.”
Despite wet weather hindering the sale, about 300 people attended, with 65 people bidding for the 26 dogs.
Wagga Yard Dog Club president Matt Whitley said demand for working dogs was strong, with people travelling from as far as Queensland.
The top priced dog in 2016 was a fully-trained, seven-year-old kelpie, which went for $6200.
