The council put out a call for nominations in January, but announced on Wednesday – two weeks after the nomination period ended – the event was being deferred to undergo a “‘refurbishment”.
Indigo Heritage Advisory Committee chair Peter Wood said the committee was looking at ways to better present the awards and showcase the applications.
“We want to be able to do justice to those people who care for our heritage and who take the trouble to enter their projects in the heritage awards,” he said.
“It was decided that this year we would not hold the awards, but bring them back in 2018. In the meantime, the committee will be investigating a range of different ways to present the awards.”
The late Don Chambers was honoured with the Heritage Gold Award for heritage advocacy last year in recognition of his contribution to Rutherglen and the Indigo Shire.
Mr Wood said the awards had been very successful over many years.
“With our understanding of what heritage is and our understanding of what people consider is important, it is time to take a fresh look at the awards program,” he said.
