The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the typical NSW resident is a 38-year-old female, who was born in Australia, is married and lives in a three-bedroom household with two children.

The average Victorian shares these characteristics too, but is one year younger.

Albury resident Mrs Smith fit the entire profile except she was 36 and does not have at least one parent born overseas.

Mrs Fortington, a 34-year-old from Wodonga, shared the exact same divergence from the respective profile.

“It’s interesting we’re the average, which is good because what we are is a great place to be … but I think there is a lot of variety,” she said.

“I have friends who are married and are choosing not to have kids, and it seems to be there isn’t a specific expectation,” she said.

“I’m from a family of two, so I guess that fits in with the profile, however my husband is one of six.”

Mrs Smith said her husband was also one of six – something that she agreed was becoming a rarity.

“With some of my friends who have decided to have a third child, I think of it as going for a big family, but back when I was a child people would have three or four children,” she said.

“With all of my friends, there’s such a broad range of living circumstances.

“I’m surprised with the education – I would have thought that might be a bit higher as a lot of people do go on to further study these days.”

Both women also hit the mark with living arrangements; each having two vehicles and undertaking five to 14 hours of unpaid domestic work.

In Victoria, the household was owned with a mortgage, and in NSW, it was owned outright.

Mrs Smith believed it was easier for families like hers to have home ownership in their sights, living in NSW.

“If we were living in Melbourne, we wouldn’t have three bedrooms and a backyard,” she said.

“We might be the average, but I don’t think we’re necessarily the norm.”
