THE letting go of helium balloons is to be banned by Federation Shire.

Administrator Mike Eden is expected to adopt the move, which will apply to municipal reserves and events, at Tuesday’s council meeting at Corowa.

The step is aimed at helping the environment and follows an approach from south coast council Eurobodalla Shire.

Its mayor reported finding balloon remnants from the Riverina on her beaches.

Since 2000 it has been illegal in NSW to release more than 20 balloons.
