The Roos were belted by Wangaratta Rovers.
“(Desperation) creates you those 50-50 chances, and some balls that you probably don’t necessarily win, but you can win if you go hard and we just didn’t win too many of them,” he said.
The Robinson brothers – forward Will and John – battled bravely, while Sam Keating, Jordan Lavis, Brent Rose and veteran Kade Kuschert also played well, among a few others.
But given the Roos are at their lowest ebb, and facing another winless season, the club needs every player to play desperate.
“Instead of going for a 50-50 ball, you probably take the safe option and just have a look at it, rather than attack the footy,” Burgess said.
“It’s probably what happened a hell of a lot.”
It could hardly be tougher for the Roos though, given they face Yarrawonga next.
