The Lions banged on six goals in the opening quarter, but the Hawks slowed down the pacy home side to post a 16.5 (101) to 12.14 (86) win.
“The footy was pretty frenetic and the footy moved from end to end really quickly,” Kiewa coach Adam Mudra said.
“For us it was just about how do we slow them down a little bit.
“Playing at that speed, I think by the end of the game everyone would have been knackered.
“We probably just had to get our defensive mechanisms right and controlled the outside a little better.”
The Lions’ Dean Druce was proving a problem in the first half, so Mudra moved Wylie Jackson forward and put Aaron Gordon on to the key forward in the third term.
Callum Turner also continued his superb season for the visitors with a best on ground display.
“Callum coached the club last year and he said to me, ‘look, I just want to play, I just want to get back to enjoying my footy’, and he’s been our most consistent player,” Mudra said.
