Star player James Devlin had a kick in the final seconds to win the game, from almost in front, but painstakingly missed the shot for a 52-51 loss.
It was a bitter blow for Devlin after he had played superbly, racking up a host of points.
“Obviously with the high scores it wasn’t a game for the purists in terms of defence,” Steamers’ coach Paul Musarra said.
“They controlled play for most of the game, they led by two to three tries at one stage, but we just couldn’t get away with it.”
The Steamers’ hopes took a hit when pacy back Ash Daniel dislocated a shoulder.
The loss has pushed the border outfit from the top five, while it was a second successive win for the students after a winless 2016.
There’s now a two-week break, which will allow the Steamers to get players back after a tough run with injury and unavailability.
