The sportsmen and women, media personalities and business representatives at Friday’s Stars of the Border Dance for Cancer would not have spent too much time on a stage before, complete with full costumes and makeup, but they easily won over the crowd.
It was not just one night – these amateur dancers gave up hours of their valuable time every week, over a couple of months, to ensure they nailed their performances.
It says a lot about the Border region that we have the type of people willing to put themselves out for judgement for a much bigger cause.
Their fundraising efforts were perhaps most impressive of all – $65,000 is a wonderful total to go to Cancer Council NSW.
Albury Tigers netballer Olivia Aughton was a worthy winner, complete with a costume, and enthusiastic and impressive dancing, that would have even caught the attention of Baz Luhrmann.
You could not fault the judges for all holding up the 10s after her performance.
No one at The Border Mail knew what we were in for when we watched our editor Xavier Mardling start his dance.
We were busy being impressed by his moves to The Time Warp, when he ripped off his pants to reveal fishnet stockings – the screams (in delight) may have been heard across Albury.
Thunder player Jon Huggett went a step further, taking off his shirt completely during his dance, much to the joy of the crowd.
Things were getting a bit raunchy on stage, the drinks were flowing at the bar and the almost 500-strong crowd were all having a good laugh.
But no one was forgetting why they were there.
Cancer is something that affects so many people in the community.
We have the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre offering services to locals and Relay for Life raising big totals of money each year, but sadly, there is never enough.
There are so many causes wanting donations these days, they can all suffer from competing for attention.
Congratulations to the Stars of the Border Dance for Cancer for continuing to host an event that is not only fun, but draws on the selflessness of some of the region’s best.
