Up next is Twin City Wanderers, Wodonga Heart, Albury City and St Pats.
Twin City Wanderers
Rating: 6/10
Win/draw/loss: 5-3-3
Next three: Albury Hotspurs, Boomers, Wodonga Diamonds.
Season high: A memorable 3-2 win over Albury United after the Easter break in round five.
Season low: Losing to Myrtleford in round three after conceding in the 90th minute.
Star Player fancies: Cody Walsh, Callum Speirs.
Injury list: Aaron Williams, Jarrod Murphy, Phil Tester, Michael Shimmin, Jason Bowe.
In a nutshell: Twin City has played well in patches, but haven’t been able to produce it consistently.
Surprisingly, the Wanderers are yet to keep a clean sheet either, despite taking 18 points from their first 11 games.
Suspensions to Brendan Hasler (five weeks) and Mohammad Abbas (nine weeks) haven’t helped the cause, but the evenness of this year’s competition means they are far from out of it.
Wodonga Heart
Rating: 4/10
Win/draw/loss: 0-0-11
Next three: Melrose, Wangaratta, Albury City
Season high: Senior exposure given to a number of younger players.
Season low: Suffering a number of heavy defeats against quality opposition.
Star Player fancies: Brandon Fleming.
Injury list: Rhys Jones.
In a nutshell: Wodonga Heart have formed a tight-knit group and a lot of results haven’t fairly reflected the way they have been playing.
Injuries and player unavailability haven’t helped the situation, but the side is hopeful of producing some better results in the second half.
Albury City
Rating: 6.5/10
Win/draw/loss: 5-2-4
Next three: Wangaratta, Melrose, Wodonga Heart.
Season high: A 3-1 win away to Cobram, capped off by an outstanding goalkeeping display from Campbell Taylor.
Season low: A 3-0 loss at home to Boomers with two red cards.
Star Player fancies: Hayden Curry-Johnson, David Woodall, Campbell Taylor.
Injury list: Dan Millynn, Patrick Brown, Indra Ggai, Trent Duffy, Blake Furness.
In a nutshell: Whilst the results have not all been what City coach Matthew Maw had in mind, the side is better placed than last year’s midway point when it had a more experienced senior list.
All results minus the Boomer’s game have been close and if City can change those narrow losses or draws into wins, they will be a threat in the second half of the season.
Its young list is learning and adapting every week and is capable of securing a finals spot and starting another cup final run.
Forward Hayden Curry-Johnson and goalkeeper Campbell Taylor have been the standouts, along with the ever-consistent David Woodall.
St Pats
Rating: 4/10
Win/draw/loss: 2-0-9
Next three: Cobram, Myrtleford, Albury United.
Season high: A hard-fought 1-0 win against Melrose to lead into the mid-season break.
Season low: Heavy losses to Myrtleford (5-0 in round one) and Cobram (6-1 in round two) to start the season.
Star Player fancies: Matthew Turner, Jayden Head, Cody Cartwright.
Injury list: Sam Ferris, Aaron McGlynn.
In a nutshell: St Pats have blooded half-a-dozen young players this year who are continuing to learn the ins and outs of senior soccer and what is required.
The inability to field the same team week in, week out, due to injuries, has hurt Steven Chater’s men’s chances of being a consistent challenger to the teams above them.
St Pats are looking forward to the second half of the year, and, with a fully fit and healthy squad, are expecting to improve on their first round results.
Matt Turner has been a standout throughout the campaign and will continue to play an important role for the remainder of the year.
