The council has dumped plans for a commercial development behind Albury Swim Centre to concentrate on improvements between Bungambrawatha Creek and Oddies Creek playground.
The $5 million sought from a recently announced state government package will be added to the same amount already included in the council budget.
Major features of plans released for public comment on Thursday include a viewing deck at end of Bungambrawatha Creek, floating pontoon and boardwalks behind the swim centre, making Hovell Tree Drive one-way for traffic to create more carparks, parking options for buses and recreational vehicles in Australia Park and improved access to Oddies Creek playground.
The existing Oddies Creek playground carparking will be scrapped under the plan, but 27 replacements parks will be created near a new pedestrian bridge linking the playground and Australia Park.
Upgrades to the Hovell Tree Park wood-fired oven and creation of an overflow parking area for major community events including Australia Day celebrations have also been proposed.
Mayor Kevin Mack said he looked forward to community interest in the plans.
“If there is community support, we will look to leverage the $5 million for Murray River Experience projects already contained in council’s budget to attract a further $5 million of funding from the state government," he said.
"This would allow us to achieve much of our vision for the central riverside parks at no additional cost to ratepayers.”
Concept plans supporting the expressions of interest for the state government funding and released publicly also coincide with a planning proposal also going before council on Monday night for additional approved activities within the Australia Park area.
It is presently zoned public recreation which restricts commercial uses.
Proposed permitted uses include food and beverage, kiosks, hairdressing and small offices.
