Mellington now has 46 goals after only five games and will join Wodonga’s Mark Stockdale and Lavington’s Chris Stuhldreier as the fastest to a half-century if he can add the four against North Albury on Saturday.
Quite remarkably, he now sits only two goals behind Wangaratta’s Michael Newton in the Doug Strang Medal, despite missing the first six games with suspension.
“We gave him plenty of opportunities and he was in the right spot,” co-coach Joel Mackie said.
The 240-point margin was the equal third-highest in league history.
The Tigers were also delighted with debutants Ben Gould and Will McIntosh.
“Willy would have kicked four goals four, or thereabouts, and he had 30 touches, while Benny Gould kicked a goal and had about 20 touches, I suppose,” Mackie said.
