The 20-year-old victim had stopped his red Chrysler Neon sedan at Melrose Park on Barlow Street about 10.30pm on Saturday.
A man in his late 20s with a green hoodie, slim build and dark skin approached the driver's side door armed with a hammer.
Two other men were nearby during the incident.
The man in the hoodie removed the car keys and ordered the Gerogery man out of the car, threatening him with the hammer.
He got into the vehicle and drove away.
The two other men were on the opposite side of the car and were last seen running through the park towards Wagga Road.
The victim's vehicle had Victorian plates RCC130.
Police want to speak to anyone who can help identify the trio, including the driver of a black Suzuki hatchback which was seen nearby.
Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said the driver may have information that could help with the investigation.
“Police are appealing for any person with information about the incident to contact Albury detectives or Crime Stoppers,” he said.
"Police are also requesting the owner (or) driver of what was described as a black Suzuki hatchback which was seen in the area to contact them as they may have information which will assist.”
Crime statistics show there were three cases of robberies involving a weapon, other than a firearm, in the Albury region in the 12 months to March.
That’s down from five for the previous 12 month period.
Police are also investigating an incident involving a firearm in Howlong a few hours later.
Two people were asleep at a home on Read Street when they were woken about 5am on Sunday.
They had heard a man outside the house yelling and banging on the front door of the property.
The man took out a firearm a short time later and threatened the pair with it, before fleeing the area in a silver or gold coloured station wagon.
Police are also appealing for anyone with information about the Howlong incident to contact them.
