McCormick, a professional coach who has strong ties to the region with family in Wangaratta, has been praised for Spieth’s turnaround with the putter at Royal Birkdale.
To claim victory, Spieth had to hole a series of crucial putts on the back nine to overcome a one-shot deficit.
He holed a six-footer for a clutch bogey save on the 13th, followed by a birdie on the 14th, a 40-foot eagle on the 15th, a 25-foot birdie on the 16th and a six-foot birdie on the 17th to claim the Claret Jug for the first time.
McCormick revealed it was all about getting Spieth to relax.
“Even this week there were some questions in his mind,” McCormick told Golf Digest.
“Therefore, my role here was reassurance on the putting green and our practice sessions.”
