Police charge alleged arsonist over fires at home of Wangaratta mother

Police conducted a search warrant on Tuesday and charged the 33-year-old woman with criminal damage by fire and conduct endangering life, and released her on bail.

Detective Senior Constable Justin Schulze said the alleged offences involved four separate fires at the victim’s Burke Street home over two months.

“It was established that they were deliberately lit,” he said. “The accused was known to the victim.”

On the last occasion on July 14, a gas meter next to the weatherboard home was set alight about 4.30am and spread to the side of the house.

“I’m getting sick of idiot people trying to burn the house down, especially when I’ve got two children in the house,” she told The Border Mail at the time.

The case will be heard at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on September 18.
