A driver travelling south on the Beechworth Wodonga Road noticed a burning plastic smell about 1.40pm on Monday.
He pulled the car over to the side of the road and opened the bonnet.
The Nissan Pathfinder became engulfed in flames and the man called Triple-0.
Wodonga station officer David Brown said the vehicle was fully alight by the time firefighters arrived.
“He’s safe, which is the best result,” he said of the driver.
“We can replace cars, but we can’t replace drivers.”
The man was travelling to look at property when the fire broke out.
Mr Brown said the driver had done the right thing by moving the car to the side of the road so it didn’t create a safety hazard.
It follows a fatal car fire in the Chiltern Valley, and recent vehicle fires in Wodonga and on the Hume Highway near Chiltern.
