Nick Wilson, 45, crashed into a field at the Locksley Airfield about 11.15am on Sunday.
The crash occurred at Locksley, south of Shepparton, in front of his friends.
The keen hang-glider had travelled to the airfield and was seriously injured while he attempted to land his glider.
People performed CPR but were unable to save the 45-year-old.
He had been towed by an aircraft before being released.
Peter Holloway of Freedom Airsports sent his condolences to his partner Leanne Hodson, and Mr Wilson’s family and friends.
Ms Hodson thanked all those who tried to assist.
“Thank you Peter and thank you everyone that tried to help Nick,” she wrote on social media.
“I know you all are hurting too.”
Mr Holloway said an accident report was being prepared, and that he was “incredibly touched and humbled by the number of messages of support” he had received after the incident.
Leading Senior Constable Jason Woosnam said the cause of the crash was still being investigated.
“He has lost control of the glider,” he said.
“As a consequence, he has struck the ground.
“It’s still under investigation.”
Leading Senior Constable Woosnam said there were about eight witnesses to the crash.
The group ran over to Mr Wilson to give first aid.
He said it was a tragic accident.
Mr Wilson had many years of experience in the sport and had flown hang-gliders at Locksley more than 100 times.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
