A section of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail will be upgraded to carry vehicles with a 20-tonne mass.
The project will cost about $365,000 and will be funded with disaster relief fund cash and Alpine Shire Council money.
Past floods have closed the road for two to three days.
The works, which will require some vegetation removal, are expected to be completed by 2018.
