The Service Court house in Wodonga was targeted in the early hours of Thursday morning.
People were asleep at the time, but the child luckily wasn’t in their room during the incident.
A wallet and mobile phone were stolen, and police believe the incident is linked to another aggravated burglary at nearby Menzies Court where an X-Box was taken.
“This is particularly disturbing to us in that the entry point has been a child’s bedroom,” Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said of the Service Court incident.
“We do believe it to be random, this particular house, as to why it was chosen.
“The seriousness of entering someone’s home at that time in the morning for theft or for any reason is of concern.”
Police want to track down a man wearing a backpack captured by a security camera about 2am.
