Former SunRice chair, Jerilderie mayor and highly respected rice industry advocate Terry Hogan died on Wednesday.

The Coleambally rice grower was a director on the SunRice board for 17 years, including five years as chairman from 1996 to 2001.
“Terry undoubtedly played an integral role in driving the success of SunRice and the Australian rice industry and both will be indebted to his significant contribution,” SunRice chairman Laurie Arthur said.
“He will be sadly missed by the rice industry and those who had the privilege of knowing and working with Terry during his time with SunRice.
“Our thoughts are with Terry’s wife Heather and the Hogan family at this sad time.”
Mr Hogan’s extensive involvement in and service to the rice industry were recognised with an Order of Australia Medal in 2003.
Highly respected in the industry and across the Riverina for his fight for water, Mr Hogan was a long-serving Director of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia and Coleambally Irrigation; and served as Chairman of the Rice Cooperative Research Centre.
The medal was also presented for his more than 45-year commitment to local government, including 13 years as Mayor of Jerilderie, with a 10-year stint between 2004 and 2014.
Mr Hogan retired from local government in May 2016, including from his role as founding Chairman of the Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils.
During his time as SunRice Chairman, Mr Hogan’s leadership was instrumental in driving change that underpinned the company’s transformation from a rice processor to a globally competitive food export business.
He instigated the restructure to deliver a commercially skilled Board to best support and serve the company, while harnessing the information and analysis capabilities of SAP business resource technology to improve company performance and returns to growers.
“It was an honour to know Terry, who I greatly respected for his leadership and support, not just for myself but for many current and future rice industry leaders,” Mr Arthur said.
Other recognition Mr Hogan achieved included receiving an Outstanding Service Award from the New South Wales Local Government and Shires Association and awarded the honorary title of Emeritus Mayor in 2013; the Robert Wilson OAM Award for services in progressing local government regional cooperation in 2010; and the Sir John Monash Medal for Agribusiness Cooperative Directors in 2000.
