Emergency services were called to a house in Acacia Crescent about 2pm on Monday.
Two people were inside the home and were assessed by paramedics, but were uninjured.
Firefighter Andrew Schulz said the explosion – which was rare – was caused by dust in a roof cavity being ignited by an old light short circuiting.
“It's not very common, but it does happen,” he said.
“A light malfunctioned and the dust and air mixture were just at the right levels, and thankfully no-one was hurt.
“A few lose tiles were blown off the roof.
"The occupants escaped without injury.”
Mr Schulz said it was the first time he had attended a dust explosion in his 12 years as a firefighter.
The occupants, who were "quite shaken” by the incident, were being looked after by their daughter.
