The Lakers limped to 9-127 from their 40 overs before bowling the Hawks out for 126 to prevail by the barest of margins.
Rovers seemed to be travelling comfortably at 3-94 before a lower order collapse gave the Lakers the points.
The Hawks required six runs from the final over with one wicket in hand and it soon became two off five when Damien Kelly found the boundary off the first ball.
But Ben Doyle responded, knocking over Kelly the very next ball.
Lakers’ captain-coach Matt Knight admitted they didn’t do enough with the bat, but had confidence in the bowlers.
“We’re probably lucky Jimmy Irvine, who batted at 10, got us a nice 20 not out which made the difference in the end,” Knight said.
“Our bowling brigade has been our fallback on many occasions and yesterday was no exception.
“Jimmy saved us with the bat and ended up with four wickets.”
Beechworth were also on the right side of a tight tussle against Greta.
The Wanderers reached 6-143 from 40 overs and restricted Greta to 7-140 to grab a three-run triumph.
Kayde Surrey and Stewart Pearce put on 86 for the first wicket for Beechworth, scoring 43 and 41, respectively, with Jack Ryan’s 22 the next best.
Nick Pell grabbed 4-30 with the ball for Greta.
A steady knock of 45 from Andrew Squires kept Greta in the hunt, before they ultimately fell short.
Matt Pearce was the pick of the Wanderers’ bowlers with 3-21.
Beechworth coach Mark Butters was pleased with the performance given they came off the bye in the opening round.
“It probably got closer than we wanted, I think they needed eight off the last over,” Butters said.
“We were happy to get away with it, we dropped a few catches early and let them off the hook a bit, but they batted well towards the end.
“I think Greta is a reasonable side, so I’m happy to get away with the start we did.”
Delatite’s 5-182 was more than enough to defeat Ovens Valley United who were bowled out for 137.
City Colts continued their strong start with a win against Benalla, bowling the Bushrangers out for 118 before finishing on 7-139.
