Only days after starting the season with a sensational victory against reigning premier Albury at Mulwala, the Pigeons have learnt that Powell will move to Melbourne for employment and Svarc looks set to miss eight matches.
Svarc kicked three goals in the reserves against Albury and would have been close to senior selection for today’s showdown against North Albury at Bunton Park.
“He can’t take a trick at the moment,” Ednie said.
“After last year it’s disappointing because he had strung a few games together in practice matches and was doing everything right.
“It was just a collision in a marking contest.”
Powell made Yarrawonga’s first grade side for round 1 and showed enough to suggest he would have been able to hold down a spot after crossing from the Picola and District league.
“We’re disappointed to lose him, but you can’t stand in the way of a kid and his employment,” Ednie said.
Despite last weekend’s win against Albury, Ednie said North Albury was always difficult to beat particularly on its home turf with top-liners Matt McDonald, Dan Leslie and Damian Cupido looming as dangermen.
“They always give us trouble,” Ednie said.
“After last week you don’t want to let it slip and we’ll need to play well to win.
“It’s always a danger game as North has some good players at the top end.”
North Albury’s biggest concern will be handling the Pigeons’ tall timber with Steve McKee, Matt O’Brien, Marcus McMillan and Josh Hammond likely to test the home team’s defence in the air.
Chris Gooley has also come into the side to debut with Michael Egan unable to be considered due to a shoulder injury.
