After being restricted to 121, Colts were eager to strike before stumps and Braden did just that by dismissing Andrew Bowden, Nick Hallam and Andrew Nunn.
Magpies will resume at 3-12.
“We just tried something different with the spin option and I managed to snag a few late ones,” Braden said.
“It’s evened things up.
“We would have liked another 60 or 70 runs but it was a tough day for batting.
“I’d say it’s about par and hopefully we can come out next week and get the job done.”
Bowden’s wicket was particularly crucial for City Colts as he had started the season with impressive knocks of 40 and 54.
Colts’ youngster Will Creed put a recent leg injury behind him to make 43 while Oliver Willett chipped in with 24.
Rovers United-Bruck bowlers Joe Thomas and Jacob Schonafinger have put their side in the box seat against Greta.
Thomas grabbed 4-28 off 25 overs while Schonafinger took 3-32 to restrict the home team to 125.
Yarrawonga-Mulwala will resume at 1-2 chasing Ovens Valley United’s 178.
Lachlan Hourigan (68) and Bernard Ruaro (43) put on a 113-run partnership to give the bottom-placed visitors a chance.
Beechworth made 9-205 against Delatite.
