The council has advertised a tender for remediation of North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve, with a contractor expected to be appointed by the end of November.
Chief executive Brendan McGrath said the soil amount was less than first thought and the council was working as quickly as possible to restore the oval.
“We understand the clubs and users of the reserve are keen to get back to the reserve and this is a significant step in that direction,” he said.
“Once again I want to thank everyone associated for their patience through what’s been a really challenging time for all involved.”
After the soil is removed, the council will engage a contractor to remediate the oval and bring it back to a playing standard.
North Wangaratta Recreation Reserve has not returned to full use since tests revealed lead contamination in May 2016.
