The direction of some local councils is being driven away from recognised core values to include a vociferous opinion on a range of issues. In the mix is the flying of flags on council buildings in support of populist issues. Most council budgets are under pressure, with juggling being performed to keep rates at a minimum whilst delivering a level of community services. Surely any actions that stray away from this path should be questioned.

When you talk about the election process for the MLA board you talk about another universe. This in no way attacks the ability or integrity of board members, however, if we went through a similar process for our government the process would be pilloried. Recently, five people representing industry sectors were nominated to provide a panel of three that in turn would vet MLA candidates. Those selected then faced an election by shareholders. No assertion is made that those finally selected were not worthy however the process is far, far from democratic.
