The State Government yesterday released its latest list of assault-prone licensed premises, in which the Albury establishment featured for the first time as a “level one” venue.

The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing classification system requires a venue to have recorded a minimum of 19 assaults within a 12-month period to qualify as level one.

The Bended Elbow, which also includes the One Nightclub upstairs, recorded 19 assaults.

In the November edition of the Government’s troublespot list, which is released every six months, the venue was classed as a “level two” premises, having reached that category’s minimum 12 assaults in a year.

Neither The Bended Elbow licensee Gavin Grant nor One Nightclub’s Bernard Zamiara returned The Border Mail’s calls yesterday.

Level one venues will be subject to a set of strict conditions from Tuesday to try to stamp out alcohol-fuelled violence across NSW.

But most of the measures, which include a lockout and no shots after midnight, are already voluntarily adhered to by members of the Albury Liquor Accord, including The Bended Elbow.

The Mean Fiddler at Rouse Hill, north-west of Sydney, topped the Government’s latest list, recording 53 assaults in the 12-month time frame.

Penrith’s Rugby League Club came in second with 42, while Newcastle venue Fannys was third, with 22 violent incidents.

The Bended Elbow rounded out the top 10 along with The Coffs Harbour Hotel and Sydney’s Tunnel Nightclub, which also each recorded 19 episodes of violence.

The New Albury Hotel also made the list for the first time, as a "level two" venue recording 12 assaults.

NSW Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene said statewide, assaults had dropped by almost 20 per cent among the 66 venues on the list.
